From the depths of my heart, I would like to thank our vets for their service to our nation. I appreciate the sacrifice and commitment made by you and your family in order to make our nation and our world a little bit safer. As teachers we can do our part by taking some time today and making sure that our kids know why this is an important day.
The History Channel online has a a three minute video that gives a thorough history of the holiday. Your students will enjoy the vintage footage. (There was a brief shot of a wounded, bloody soldier, if you have very young students preview the clip and use your discretion.) Click here for the film. It can be shown in full screen.
Wikipedia’s article on the subject is written at a seventh grade reading level and can be found here. I created a word cloud with the text of the article, which you might find helpful for a pre-reading activity. You can create your own at Wordle.net or Tagxedo.
Finally, be sure to take that special Vet in your life out for a meal today. He or she can eat for free at Applebee‘s, Golden Corral, or Chili‘s.
